Privacy Policy
TransTap Keyboard is a keyboard for iPhone. What you type stays on your iPhone. The only text that leaves it is a message you choose to translate by holding Return. TransTap has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and doesn't keep the text you translate.
What stays on your iPhone
- Everything you type. Typing, suggestions, autocorrect and swipe typing run on your iPhone. The keyboard never sends your keystrokes anywhere.
- Words the keyboard learns. The English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese keyboards remember words you type, to suggest them later. The Japanese keyboard can learn from what you type if you turn that on. These words are stored only on your iPhone, in TransTap's own storage, and are deleted when you delete the app.
- Your settings and API keys. If you add a key for your own translation service, it is kept in your iPhone's keychain and sent only to that service.
When you translate
Holding Return sends the text in the field (up to 2,000 characters), the language you are learning and your own language to a translation service, which sends back the rewritten text. Before the first translation, TransTap asks for your permission and explains where the text goes. Nothing is sent until you allow it.
The built-in service. Your text goes to TransTap's server, which runs on Cloudflare, and from there to OpenRouter, which has an AI model (currently Anthropic's Claude) write the rewritten text. TransTap's server doesn't store or log the text. TransTap asks OpenRouter to use only model providers that don't collect your data for training. These providers may keep it briefly under their own policies, for example to prevent abuse.
A service of your own. If you add your own API key (for example for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek or OpenRouter), your text goes straight from your iPhone to that service under its terms and privacy policy. It doesn't pass through TransTap.
What TransTap's server keeps
To give each install its free translations and to keep the service from being abused, the server keeps:
- A random install ID, made on your iPhone and kept in its keychain. It isn't linked to your name, Apple Account, phone number or any other identifier.
- How many translations that install used today and this month, and what they cost.
To make sure requests come from the real app, TransTap uses Apple's App Attest, which lets Apple confirm the app is genuine without identifying you. Your IP address is used briefly to limit how many requests can be made per minute, and isn't stored with your usage.
What TransTap doesn't do
- No accounts or sign-in.
- No advertising, analytics or crash-reporting services.
- No tracking across apps or websites, and no selling or sharing of data with data brokers.
Full Access
iOS asks you to allow "Full Access" for a keyboard to reach the internet. TransTap needs it only to translate. Typing works without it, and without it nothing is ever sent.
Children
TransTap Keyboard isn't directed at children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect their information.
Your choices
- Use the keyboard without Full Access, and nothing leaves your iPhone.
- Add your own API key in the app, and translations go straight to the service you chose.
- Delete the app to remove its settings and the words it learned. Items in the iPhone's keychain, which are the install ID and any API keys you added, can stay on your iPhone after the app is deleted, and the install ID is used again if you reinstall.
Because the server keeps only a random install ID and counts, TransTap can't tell which record is yours. If you have a question or a request about your data, write to transtap@icloud.com.
